Although our bid this year for the UK Town of Culture was not successful (there were over 400 applications) - a major milestone was reached which is a testament to the creativity, collaboration and ambition seen across Purbeck. We will now focus on developing many of the ideas and projects set out in our bid, taking account of priorities and funding opportunities.
The bid reflected the rich mix of landscape, heritage and culture, alongside a vibrant network of festivals, organisations, creatives and communities. It set out a bold vision for how culture can bring people together, support the local economy and create lasting opportunities for residents and visitors alike.
The process sparked new connections and conversations - and we’re committed to building on that momentum to shape the future of culture in Purbeck together.

As part of the UK Town of Culture 2028 process, DCMS invited towns and communities across the country to submit a digital postcard - a chance to celebrate what makes each place unique. This is ours: a snapshot of the creativity, culture, and community spirit that makes Swanage and the Isle of Purbeck so special.

A huge thank you to everyone who joined our February community visioning workshop. It was inspiring to see so many people come together to share ideas, perspectives and ambitions for culture in Purbeck. The energy in the room was fantastic, and your contributions have directly shaped the direction of the bid and our work going forward - ensuring it reflects the voices and aspirations of the community.
We’re especially excited to see how the From Stone to Sea theme continues to develop - we’ll be in touch soon with further opportunities to get involved.
We’ve been incredibly encouraged by the strength and breadth of support from across the community and beyond.
From local festivals and cultural organisations to businesses, local groups and residents, it’s clear there is a shared belief in the power of culture to shape Purbeck’s future. This growing chorus of support - which you can see across our social media - really reflects the pride people feel in this place and reinforces the ambition of our bid as we move forward.
We’re also delighted to have the support of Dorset MPs Lloyd Hatton MP and Vikki Slade MP who have shared letters of support for the bid.
